Our Animals & Soil

Our Animals

We have chosen the Katahdin Hair sheep which is a heavy-muscled medium-sized breed. Katahdin Hair sheep are adaptable to the climate of North Carolina, ewes are easy lambers and excellent mothers with good milking ability. Lambs mature rapidly to an ideal market weight with a very mild flavor. South Mountain lambs strip graze New Zealand style which mean they are moved to fresh greens every few days to ensure the highest natural nutrition.  All of our lambs are pasture raised and pasture finished, with NO antibiotics, NO added growth hormones, and NO grains. Our flocks are always under the watchful eye of our Akbash guardian dog and our working border collie “Doon.”

Our Soil

By planting with high forage seeds and using regenerative farming practices with no till drilling this helps increases soil fertility. By building the diverse structure of the soil which teems with nutrient life and grazing all our lambs on 100% grasses this promotes healthy lambs. South Mountain Sheep & Lamb uses NO genetically modified organisms (GMO), NO Pesticides, and NO Herbicides.
